Education and Training
Education
Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), Epidemiology, University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, 2022
Master of Public Health (MPH), Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, 2014
Bachelor of Science (BS), Microbiology, University of Rochester, 2013
Research Interest
Dr. Sundermann's research focuses on the detection and investigation of healthcare-associated outbreaks of infectious diseases using genomic epidemiology. His work has uncovered multiple outbreaks including an outbreak of Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus related to contrast injection in interventional radiology procedures and an outbreak of Pseudomonas related to a contaminated gastroscope.
Within the Center for Genomic Epidemiology, he has helped build a real-time whole genomic sequencing surveillance program for the rapid detection of healthcare outbreaks and transmission at UPMC Presbyterian.
Educational Interest
Dr. Sundermann mentors public health students interested in infection prevention and genomic epidemiology.
He gives lectures on infectious disease epidemiology, infection prevention, and public health.
