Research Interest
Dr. Morrell’s current research interests include novel therapies for bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), which is the main limiting factor in survival following lung transplantation. He published the largest series to date of lung transplant patients treated with extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) for BOS. His research is currently being utilized to gain approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for utilizing ECP for BOS therapy. His other research interests include acute antibody mediated rejection, a controversial phenomena in lung transplantation. He is also interested in the effectiveness of therapies in reducing the incidence of primary graft dysfunction in the immediate post-operative period and also in improving allograft dysfunction.
Clinical Interest
Dr. Morrell’s main clinical interests are concentrated on the care of pulmonary transplant recipients and patients with end-stage lung disease. He is the medical director of the lung transplant program at UPMC and the medical director of the advanced lung disease/pulmonary step-down unit. He serves as an attending on the inpatient pulmonary transplant service, has a busy outpatient transplant clinic and also attends in bronchoscopy lab.
Educational Interest
Dr. Morrell serves at the Director of the Lung Transplant Fellowship here at the University of Pittsburgh. He is on the pulmonary, allergy and critical care fellowship education committee and is a regular lecturer in the core curriculum for pulmonary fellows. He is a small group leader for the University of Pittsburgh Medical School Advanced Physical Exam Course and also for the Body Fluid Homeostasis Pulmonary Section course.
On an international level, Dr. Morrell was a council member of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation Junior Faculty and Trainee Council and a member of the Education Committee.
