Research Interest
Dr. Althouse received a Bachelor’s of Science in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University in 2008 before moving a few blocks down Forbes Avenue to the University of Pittsburgh for post-graduate study. He earned a Master’s degree in Applied Statistics in 2010 en route to a doctoral degree in Epidemiology at the Graduate School of Public Health in August 2013, authoring cardiovascular outcomes papers from the multicenter, international BARI 2D clinical trial as part of his graduate work. Dr. Althouse began his post-graduate career as a faculty statistician for Magee-Womens Research Institute from 2013 to 2015, and then served in a similar capacity at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute from 2015 to 2018 before he was recruited to the Center for Research on Health Care in August 2018 to focus on the high-quality design, conduct, and reporting of randomized clinical trials. Dr. Althouse has presented work at national meetings of the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, and American Statistical Association, and has co-authored over 100 published manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals across various specialties, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, exercise, maternal & child health. He is currently Statistical Editor for the AHA-sponsored Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions as well as a Deputy Statistical Editor for the AATS-sponsored Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. In addition, he is the Vice Chair of the AHA Statistics Task Force, currently working on a set of guidelines for statistical analysis and reporting in AHA journals.
