Research Interest
Dr. Sgro’s scholarly work is focused on medical education and the medical humanities, through which he aims to promote patient-centeredness, influence positive professional identity formation among trainees, and increase fulfillment in the work of doctoring through storytelling and the arts.
Clinical Interest
An Academic Hospitalist at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, Dr. Sgro oversees the inpatient medicine rotation at the VA.
Educational Interest
Dr. Sgro serves as a core faculty member in the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and co-directs of the Area of Concentration in Humanities, Ethics, and Palliative Care in the School of Medicine. His scholarly work involves the implementation of narrative techniques to cultivate empathy, promote resiliency, and influence professional identify formation among medical students and residents. He is founder and director of Rounds for Reflection, which encourages medical residents to cultivate meaning and empathy through storytelling, and he has given national presentations and workshops on the medical humanities and narrative medicine.
