Research Interest
Dr. Toledo’s scientific interest is the pathogenesis and treatment of diabetes mellitus. His research program is dedicated to clinical and translational research studies related to the etiology and treatment of insulin resistance in humans. His laboratory is specialized in the state-of-the-art measurements of metabolism in vivo, including clamps, IVGTTs, stable-isotope tracers, indirect calorimetry, tissue biopsies, and exercise tests. Dr. Toledo’s work has shown that mitochondrial abnormalities are linked to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in the context of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and aging. He has also pioneered research studies of medications that improve insulin resistance and beta cell function and has been a co-investigator in the NIH-sponsored TrialNet consortium which investigates how type 1 diabetes may be prevented by immunomodulators. His research program is currently investigating the pathogenesis of pancreatitis-related diabetes to identify new possibilities of prevention and treatment. Dr. Toledo has been a Principal Investigator in studies funded by the NIH, the Dept. of Defense, and the American Diabetes Association.
Clinical Interest
Dr. Toledo's clinical interests are in the areas of diabetes and general endocrinology. He is interested in new models of care, pioneered the development of video-consultation telemedicine care in the Division of Endocrinology, and founded the CDE diabetes telemedicine clinic, which provides outpatient adult diabetes care to medically underserved areas in rural Pennsylvania.
Educational Interest
Dr. Toledo participates in the medical education of fellows, residents, and medical students. He is a member of the Subspecialty Education Committee of the UPMC Internal Medicine Residency program and previously served as Associate Program Director of the Endocrinology Fellowship Program from 2005 through 2014.
