Dr. Chiarchiaro's main educational focus is in helping medical students, residents, fellows and faculty develop and practice essential, high stakes communication skills. For example, he helps facilitate several simulation-based curricula on a local and national level designed to help learners develop communication skills. These range from teaching medical interviewing for medical students, breaking bad news and managing interpersonal conflict for residents and fellows, and helping faculty learn how to teach these critical skills. In addition to these structured classes, Dr. Chiarchiaro spearheads initiatives in the Division around communication including improvement of bedside rounding and meaningful delivery of feedback.
Dr. Chiarchiaro teaches extensively for the medical school. He is the co-director for the second year medical students' Pulmonary Pathophysiology course and the director for the second year organ system block. Additionally, he teaches courses in medical interviewing and physical exam. He serves as a mentor for medical students performing research in medical education. He is particularly interested in developing and evaluating novel curricula for the medical school’s pre-clinical years.
Finally, Dr. Chiarchiaro is involved in teaching pulmonary and critical care medicine to the fellows in-training. He is the Associate Director for the pulmonary and critical care fellowship program. Similar to above, his main educational focus at the fellow level is in developing communication skills, providing meaningful feedback, and developing novel curricula based on adult learning principles.
