Education
BS, Florida Atlantic University, 1988
MS, Florida International University, 1991
PhD, Washington University, 1996
Research Interest
Since joining the University in 2002, Dr. Rubio has collaborated on numerous research grants across several fields, serving in a leadership role on the majority of these projects. Her research is diverse, and her grants have been funded by multiple institutes and centers at NIH, as well as the National Research Mentoring Network. Dr. Rubio focuses much of her current research on diversifying the workforce. She is the director of two federally funded grants that aim to help trainees from diverse backgrounds launch and sustain successful careers in the biomedical sciences. In addition, she has investigated and published in fields such as psychometrics, structural equation modeling, quality-of-life indicators, alcoholism, and career development. During her career, she has published more than 85 peer-reviewed articles in well-respected, high-impact journals.
Educational Interest
Dr. Rubio has directed or co-directed seven courses for post-doctoral fellows and faculty members at the Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE). These courses include Biostatistics, Nonparametric Statistics, Best Practices in Clinical Research, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Regression, Computer Methods in Clinical Research, Research Ethics, and Strategic Leadership. She has mentored several junior faculty members in the School of Medicine and currently serves as an advisor for the degree-granting programs, the KL2 Clinical and Translational Science Scholars Program, and the Career Education and Enhancement for Health Care Research Diversity (CEED) - all within the ICRE.

Dr. Rubio is particularly interested in mentoring and advising trainees from underrepresented groups. She is the director of both the Leading Emerging and Diverse Scientists to Success (LEADS) and Building Up programs offered through the ICRE. LEADS helps individuals from partnering Minority Serving Institutions develop skills necessary to launch successful biomedical research careers. Building Up is a cluster randomized trial to test an intervention for people who are underrepresented in health-related science at predominately white institutions to improve their Psychological Capital, which will improve their productivity.
