My research is focused on the persistence of HIV-1 in individuals on effective antiretroviral therapies. I am interested in understanding the dynamics of the HIV-1 reservoir, particularly in terms of HIV-1 infected cell clones that carry a replication-competent viral genome that has the potential to cause viral rebound if therapy is interupted. I have designed, developed, and validated molecular-based assays that I use to 1) characterize HIV-1 proviruses and their integration site locations in the host genome and 2) quantify these individual proviruses in the context of longitudinal sampling and cell/tissue subsets.
